Finally a decent morning flight. We pushed through some paperwork, and I went to check out N5329L.

No particular intrigue in the pre-flight, we pushed back and did a run up with a little warm-up time after the magneto checks ran just a smidgen rough. I did the calls for clearance/taxi/takeoff except one where I just said "uhhhhhh" and then unkeyed and looked at Jason, and another out of Kalaeloa when I had no idea what the controller said. Kalaeloa's radio sounds like shit, no offense. Took off 22R and landed 22L, there was a gentleman in the pilot shop who said that he had been flying here for years, and he had never taken off and landed 22/26, which was the order of the morning. I have only been flying for a couple of weeks, and it's my second time. Wind was from 210, 9 knots.

I was relieved to go somewhere besides the tightly-enclosed South Practice, and we went straight to Kalaeloa (former Barber's Point NAS) to do touch-and-gos, I was a little surprised to find that it was a tower field in its new configuration, and according to Jason, we did 7 landings and take-offs there total, 5 of which he attributes to me. There were at least 2 where he was "hands-off" (his hands were still pretty close), and one where he just kept quiet. I have been using the occasional glance at the flight instructor to determine whether we were in trouble; they tell me now that this may not always be a good indicator. So I'm glad to have gotten a landing or two behind me, as the question "what does one do in the event of flight instructor failure?" doesn't haunt me now, I could get us down.

We headed out the Waianae Coast and did some maneuvers. Stalls and turns, and it was good to fly for moments at a time when I didn't have to worry about the tight boundaries of the pratice area.
