Took my buddy Miles up for my first flight as a private pilot. We did the "circle island" tour, following the perimeter of Oahu. A pretty nice day, not without its issues -- the air was a little jumpy off the Waianae Coast, and again coming up the North Shore. It wasn't bad though.

HNL tower gave us clearance for takeoff on 4R, and a warning of wake turbulence. No kidding, the big jet was crossing the runway before our eyes. All I had to do was be above his flight path before I reached it, so I held the brakes for full power, and climbed at 70 knots, sort of a hybrid short-field with no flaps. Got my first view of Dillingham field, as far as I know, as we rounded Kaena Point. We did the clockwise route, even though I planned the counter-clockwise route, because I decided that the passenger ought to be on the side with the scenery. Luckily, I asked Jerry Hew if there were any pointers for a circle tour, and he told me to look in the PCS for the Kaneohe transiting procedure. Good idea. I was a little confused at first, since the diagram gives both tower and approach freqs. At HNL bravo, one would ask approach for a transition, at Kalaeloa or Wheeler you just talk to the tower. I set up both frequencies on the radio, and tried approach first. Nobody replied, so I called tower and there they were. They list about 5 points, but it ends up being Chinaman's Hat <> Coconut Island <> Rabbit Island. Got a good look at Bellows AFB's defunct runways in Waimanalo. There were a couple of places that we scraped a cloud or two (with legal clearance, obviously), but luckily no place where I had made an altitude promise.

Miles was, as I expected, an ideal first passenger, took the turbulence with more aplomb than I did. I think that being responsible for the outcome gets your attention.

Me a Private Pilot. Well I'll be a monkey's uncle...
